Description of Major Crew Funds:

Funds supporting crew at the University of Wisconsin, which continue to accept contributions, include:

At the University of Wisconsin Foundation:

Mike Murphy Endowment Fund for Men’s Crew: Started in 2000 to honor UW men’s crew coach (1928-1934) George W. “Mike” Murphy, who took a 70% pay cut for two years to keep crew going through the Depression. The fund’s income is used to pay a portion of the annual operating expenses of men’s crew at the University of Wisconsin. It is intended to be a core fund for donors seeking to make contributions toward the long-term financial strength of men’s crew. The Murphy Fund, for example, may be designated in the bequest language of an individual’s will. To make an online contribution specifically for the Mike Murphy Endowment Fund, please visit the UW Foundation web site at https://www.uwfoundation.wisc.edu/giving/giving2.nsf/prefill?openform&seq=5079

The Captain's Fund: A permanently open fund seeking donations from UW's past crew captains, their families, and other UW men's rowing supporters. Initiated in the fall of 2006, the fund currently has nine donors (all captains) making cash and/or pledges of $10,000 or more each.

The captains making the founder contributions and pledges are: The family of the late Duane "Doc" Daentl (1950-51); Joe Irwin (Captain in 1957-58); Phil Mork (1960-61); Kevin McAleese (1986-87); Nick Donovan (1990-91); Aaron Berger (1996-97); Nelson Williams (1997-98); Matt Smith (1999-2000) and the family of the late Alan Geweke (2000-01).

The “Dad” Vail Recruiting and Scholarship Endowment Fund for Men’s Crew: Started in 2001 as a place to attract gifts over time toward the potential future offering of scholarships in men’s crew and to currently assist in the costs of recruiting mostly experienced and some novice rowers to Madison.

The Alan Reid Geweke Men’s Rowing Team Development Fund: Established in late 2002 to honor former Badger rower and 2000-01 Captain Alan Geweke (1979-2002) by Alan’s family and friends of Alan. Income from the fund pays, firstly, for the annual Alan Award to the UW rower “who has distinguished himself by effort and improvement in rowing” and, secondly, a portion of the annual operating expenses of men’s crew at the University of Wisconsin.

The Jablonic Boat Fund : Created in September 2004 to commemorate the induction of UW men’s crew coach Randy “Jabo” Jablonic into the UW Athletic Hall of Fame, this first-of-a-kind $125,000 (including pledges through early 2005) permanent endowment fund is intended to purchase a new racing eight for the men’s crew in coach Jablonic’s name each 4 to 6 years from accumulated earnings. Men’s Class Boat Funds: Established in 2002, the original men’s class of 1972-75 Boat Fund has been expanded (with separate balance tracking for each class fund) to five additional men’s class funds (1987, 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2003) thus far and serves as a place for recent graduates to focus their contributions and corporate matching gifts toward the eventual purchase of a shell for the men’s program in a class’s name.
